Position Summary 

Family Engagement Facilitator (FEF) is a mid-level professional role focused on improving educational outcomes for children with disabilities by strengthening family engagement in the NYC school system (specifically Staten Island). The FEF co-leads borough-level initiatives under the NYSED FACE Center, working closely with schools, families, community organizations, and state/regional partners. The role combines project management, training, and collaboration, with responsibilities including:

  • Leading and coordinating family engagement initiatives across schools and organizations 
  • Providing training, coaching, and technical assistance to families, educators, and community stakeholders 
  • Developing and implementing family engagement strategies and professional development plans 
  • Building partnerships and supporting system-wide improvements in special education 
  • Collecting data, evaluating program effectiveness, and reporting outcomes 

Core Special Education Processes & Frameworks

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) — the foundation of all special education services 
  • Individualized Education Program (IEP) development, review, and implementation 
  • 504 Plan basics and how it differs from an IEP 
  • Response to Intervention (RTI) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) 
  • Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and inclusion practices

The position requires strong knowledge of special education, family engagement practices, and NYC schools, along with experience in training or technical assistance, project management, and stakeholder collaboration. A master’s degree and at least 4 years of relevant experience are required. Overall, the role acts as a bridge between families, schools, and systems to make education more inclusive and effective for students with disabilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Master’s degree in education, social work, or related fields (required as per NYSED contract). 
  • At least 4+ years of experience providing professional development and/or technical assistance. 

 

Knowledge of the special education landscape in NYC and familiarity with NYC public schools, with experience working in one or more of the five boroughs.
